Big White: A Wintery World So Close To Kelowna
Ah, the difference that elevation can make! While we just got our first bit of permanent snow dusting Kelowna, Big White Ski Resort is blanketed in that classic “Champagne Powder” that seperates this Okanagan ski resort from other BC hills.

Exhillaration! Tubing is a thrill at Big White near Kelowna.
In Kelowna, our mild winter (so far) means that you’ll still see people riding their bikes and longboards in town. Meanwhile, there’s a wintery world just 55 km away that includes skiing and snowboarding, ice climbing, snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, pond hockey, and tubing.

I’m always amazed by the incredible contrast in season when I make the short trek up to Big White from Kelowna. It’s all in the elevation! Well, that and the fact that Kelowna enjoys the lake effect from Okanagan Lake, moderating our climate considerably.
Up at Big White, the snow shimmers in the sunlight (really, is there anything prettier than white snow sparkling as it catches the light of the sun’s rays??), and bundled-up skiers and snowboarders animatedly recap their favourite runs of the day.

For those that would rather not ski, there are also a host of activities to keep you entertained, as this recent story in the Georgia Straight of Vancouver explains. Who can resist the challenge of an ice climbing wall, especially if you have never tried this before? How utterly Canadian is a skate on an outdoor pond, then coming indoors for a hot cocoa with rosy-cheeked friends? And then there’s the Tubing Park at Big White, which offers an adrenalin rush that will take you back to your childhood days when you flew down a slope on your crazy carpet!
It’s the perfect day of adventure for families and friends. If you have relatives in town over the holidays, this will be sure to top their highlights list when they think back on their time in Kelowna.
Check out Big White’s website for the full list of events, activities, prices, available rental equipment (um, Everything!), and loads of other great info. Then all you have to do is round up the fam and head to the hills!
Happy Holidays!
I’m really impressed along with your writing skills and also with the format on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to look a nice weblog like this one these days..
