Mothers’ Day Tips

I checked the weather report, and we’re looking at a pretty decent Mother’s Day! 19 degrees and sunny… right Mike Roberts?  So I thought I’d suggest a nice Mothers’ Day walk as an activity to do with Mom on Sunday. The Mission Creek Greenway is the perfect ticket for an invigorating stroll.

Let’s say you’ve just taken Mom out to brunch at one of the great restaurants in town that serve special Mothers’ Day brunches (check Wild Apple Grill’s website as an example). Or maybe you’ve whipped up something mouthwatering yourself for brunch. Keep the special occasion going with a nice walk in the spring sunshine along Mission Creek, a gentle gravel multi-use pathway that is accessible to all sorts of different ages and abilities.

For those who may be visiting or new to Kelowna, the Mission Creek Greenway is a 17 km long trail that runs alongside Mission Creek. It goes all the way from the lake (path starts at Lakeshore Dr.) out to Gallaghers Canyon. Mostly the path is flat and linear, lined with trees, and set well away from roads. You really feel like you’re in a forest along the creek at many points. But if you get onto the path from the Hollywood Rd entrance, you’ll be on a more rugged path that does go up and down hills. This is the part of the pathway where you’ll get those spectacular Canyon walls rising up either side of the creek, and it is totally set apart from any roads. It’s great!

There are lots of places to park your car and get onto the Greenway – the popular entrance is on Springfield Rd at Leckie, where the EECO Centre is located. But you can also get onto the Mission Greenway at a bunch of other access points that are shown on this location map. You can also stop in at the Visitor Centre at 544 Harvey in Kelowna to get a map from the Visitor Counsellors and chat with them about the best points of access for you.

This is a free and fun thing to do for Mothers’ Day that will give you and your family quality time together. Getting out and enjoying some fresh spring air together is easy and memorable. If you’re a regular at the Greenway, you know how energizing it can be to walk it – and if it’s a new activity for you, you might just get hooked!
