Kelowna Blossom Watch

One of Kelowna’s charms is its proximity to rural landscapes – city meets orchard. On a bike ride last weekend, I marveled at how quickly we went from a residential area to cycling past acreages and orchards along Valley Road. The orchards are beginning to reawaken, and it reminded me that every year, one of the most common questions we get at the Kelowna Visitor Centre is about picking fruit.

Our visitors love that opportunity to pick fruit off a tree and crunch into it something that seems so natural and everyday for many of us in Kelowna. If you have visiting friends and relatives, one really memorable thing that you can do with them is to visit an orchard, or simply to get out into our blossom-laced neighbourhoods like North Glenmore, East Kelowna, and South East Kelowna, and simply enjoy the colours in the spring. With this in mind, here’s a schedule for Kelowna’s blossom watch, making you look like a real smarty-pants when you host guests this spring.

There’s another bonus when the blossoms make their entrance in Kelowna this month, aside from knowing that fruit is on its way. Have you noticed how fragrant the air is in the springtime? Take a walk in rural Kelowna, and you’ll see (or should I say smell) that the air takes on a floral and fruity aroma.

Come summer, when our orchards are heavily laden with fruit, a visit to farm markets and fruit stands is particularly satisfying. You can check the classifieds for u-pick listings. Castanet regularly posts ads for people who want to share their ripe fruit with others because they will never be able to use it all themselves. Answering to a Castanet ad for u-pick cherries last year, my family enjoyed fresh cherries to our hearts’ content! Check in regularly at Castanet Classifieds.

Enjoy your fragrant spring walks or bike rides, and be sure to bite into a fresh Kelowna fruit this summer!
