Canada’s First Medal and Other Exciting Things
It was BC Day at Robson Square today. Day 3 of the Olympics proved to be a beautiful day with brilliant sunshine and warm weather in Vancouver. So much so, that an Emcee at Robson Square today welcomed the crowd to “the Vancouver Spring Olympics” and asked the spotlight operator to turn it down a little because the light was blinding! People were enjoying the Robson Square events and Zipline in decidedly spring attire: no jackets and light clothing was the standard. The cherry blossoms are already blooming on the trees, crocuses are flowering, and daffodils are making their entrance, too.

Inside the BC International Media Centre at Robson Square, people were buzzing too. Today the excitement was for Canada’s first medal, won by Jennifer Heil in Women’s Moguls Skiing. We hosted a press conference with Jennifer and teammates from the Canadian Moguls team, which was attended by a raft of news media. My volunteer duties include helping to coordinate the press conferences and events, so press conferences hold special interest for me! The one today was well attended and the athletes were well-spoken and genuine.

Back outside the mood was bright and happy for BC Day. Crowds watched shows at Robson Square, CTV was filming the proceedings, and the zipline carried whooping passengers across overhead. A spectacular day, no doubt about it!

And being Valentine’s Day, too, many couples were to be found wandering the beaches and sea wall this evening. I strolled down there to get some fresh air after my volunteering, and can report that the scene was of a lovely balmy evening.
