Ski, Ski, Ski!

As we sit by our fireplaces heavy with turkey dinner’s Tryptophans, let’s not forget that winter gives us snow, and that snow is there for our enjoyment! Both Christmas and Boxing Day are a blast at Big White Ski Resort – Santa cruises the slopes on Christmas, and there is a ton to do for families, skiers, and snowboarders up there.

Besides skiing and snowboarding, there’s skating on 2 great outdoor ponds (you can rent skates up there for just over $7 for the day or bring your own, of course). Hockey equipment is also available. And to keep you warm, there’s a fantastic bonfire by the ponds.

I won’t soon forget going tubing on their Mega Coaster – the rides were long and exhilarating, yet totally safe for families. There are even tubing and skating passes available. Other activities available at Big White include snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and even snowbiking (yes, you read correctly!).

Big White has been recognized as a top destination for family skiing by a daily newspaper in the U.K., and there are definitely lots of reasons for that as you can read in this previous blog post.

Hands down the most well-known thing for Big White is the champagne powder snow that skiers and snowboarders go ga-ga over. Our climate in this valley is super dry, meaning that the snow we get is particularly dry and light. It’s a delight to ski with the “Snow Ghosts” (trees covered in snow from the loads of white stuff Big White gets). Big White gets an average of 750 cm of snow or 24.5 feet, so powder days are frequent.

This holiday, make sure you get up to Big White for some winter adventure. It’s just 56 km from Kelowna (35 miles) so the drive is pretty short and the fun goes on and on.
