A Rookie at the Pottery Wheel

This is a fun idea for anyone skiing at Big White/Silver Star, joining a spouse on a conference, or otherwise looking for a different experience in Kelowna. The Rotary Centre for the Arts in downtown Kelowna is home to a bunch of talented artists who offer classes in different artistic media – and you can participate on a drop-in basis. In the video below, you’ll see how I got my first lesson in using the pottery wheel at the studio of artist Bonnie Anderson located in the Rotary Centre for the Arts. If I can do this, anyone can!!

Bonnie’s studio is a spacious and bright space with a garage door to the outside of the building where she has her Raku firing area. The front of the studio is a storefront where you can purchase beautiful ceramics and paintings as keepsakes or gifts. Right outside her studio inside the Rotary Centre is a great gallery whose exhibits change monthly. The whole area pulses with creativity, and it draws you right in to the creative zones in your brain. She offers classes that range from drop-in sessions to month-long courses, so check her website for details.

Other artsy classes available at this arts centre range from salsa dancing to drumming, and figuring painting to jewelry making. Many of the courses are perfect for the drop-in visitor, so call them or check their website under Activities for the options. This is a great way to spend a “down day” from skiing, or to bring something special home from your vacation in Kelowna.
